Green Party of Canada Assembles Shadow Cabinet
TORONTO March 5, 2004 -- The Green Party of Canada (GPC) continues to build its base of support and expert resources in preparation for a spring election and to eventually form government. Today, Jim Harris, Leader of the GPC, named Tom Manley as the GPC's Agriculture and Food Advocate. Manley owns and operates Homestead Organics, Ontario's leading organic farm supply and service business.
"The future of agriculture in Canada needs a completely different paradigm," said Manley. "We have a plan that will foster marketing and distribution systems that provide farmers with a fair share of the consumer food dollar. We need to change Canada's research and policy priorities from technology development and commodity exports to low-input food production and import replacement. The GPC has the only viable alternative to the Get Big or Get Out attitude of current governments."
Manley has been preparing for this assignment for some time. In March 2003, he assumed the role of Agriculture Advocate for the Green Party of Ontario. In the 2003 Ontario election he was the Green Party candidate in the area surrounding Cornwall and his third place finish drew significant attention. For the last few months, he has led the team which has assembled the agriculture and food plank of the GPC platform.
Manley comes with well-rounded experience, from growing up on a dairy farm to a Military College degree in computer science and officer service in the Canadian Armed Forces to project leadership in the development and launch of the Bell Sympatico Internet Service.
